Research guides

Practical checklists for planning, running and reporting research.

A one-page research plan

  • The question, in one sentence
  • The observation that would answer it
  • Model system, groups and controls
  • Replication: biological vs technical
  • Planned analysis, decided before seeing the data
  • Risks and a fallback for each

Before you start the experiment

  • Is the protocol written down, versioned and agreed with your supervisor?
  • Are reagents, cell lines and instruments recorded with lot numbers and settings?
  • Do you have the ethics and biosafety approvals the work needs?
  • Where will raw data be stored, backed up and named?
